Building From Boxes – A New Start

🧱 Starting from Boxes

Alright, let’s do this. First post. First sketchbook. First time sharing the mess publicly.

This is where it begins.

This post is a peek at the start of my drawing practice in January 2025. These pages aren’t masterpieces—they’re warmups, experiments, and weird little thoughts in pen form. I’m sharing them because it’s way more fun to build something out loud.

📓 The Shapes Book

Cover of a black spiral sketchbook labeled "Shape Book" with a white cube drawing and sketchy lines on top of a wooden surface.

This is my sketchbook. It says “Shape Book” on the cover like it’s some kind of ancient art relic. Inside? Mostly cubes. And a few scrappy ideas trying to become better lines.

✍️ Wobbly Lines and Wiggly Curves

Sketchbook page showing practice lines, curves, ellipses, and a few cubes in pen.

I started with straight lines, curves, and ellipses. They’re not perfect. That’s kinda the point. Practice doesn’t always look good. Sometimes it looks like this.

🧠 Self-Portrait: Version 0.1

Sketchbook pen drawing of a self-portrait with bold strokes and expressive line work.

Tried to draw myself in pen with no erasing. Ended up with a guy who looks like he just got hit with a light existential crisis. But hey—he’s got character.

📆 Shapes, Shadows, and Lightbulb Moments

Sketchbook drawing of stacked cubes with diagonal hatching to study light and shadow.

Stacking cubes, experimenting with shadows, pretending I understand how light works. These pages are me trying to wrap my head around perspective.

💥 Doodles Gone Wild

Sketchbook page with cubes, perspective studies, and spontaneous doodles in ink.
Daily sketchbook warmup page with curves, ellipses, and a sketch of an eye

Less focused, more fun. Some circles, some chaos, maybe a villain origin story or two. This is what happens when you just let your pen wander.

🧰 Frank Was Here

Sketchbook page with cubes and a diner sign reading “FRANK’S” above an empty noir-style building

Started off drawing cubes, but then this sketch of a moody, noir-style diner just showed up. I slapped a sign on it that says “FRANK’S” and suddenly it felt like a midnight pit stop in some rainy Gotham alley. Who’s Frank? No idea. But the vibes are immaculate.

🌍 Galactic Guesswork

Cartoon-style sketch showing the sun, Earth, and moon in an orbit with arrows representing light and shadow

A cartoony attempt to explain eclipses and moonlight to my daughters. Earth’s in the middle, Sun on one side, Moon on the other, arrows flying everywhere. May not be NASA-approved, but the classroom energy was strong that day.

💬 Sharing the Journey

Because the beginning is weird and messy and actually pretty great. I want to look back on these pages and remember exactly how things started. And maybe you’re a beginner too, trying to figure out what comes after line one.

Let’s find out together.
